"Moist" coverlet possibly connected to Virginia
Lebanon, Oregon, December 15, 2008...Possible connection of "Moist" jacquard woven coverlet back to Virginia is through the marriage of Martha N. "Mattie" MCDONALD and William Frederick MOIST on 13 Dec 1877-Linn County, Oregon.
This connection is proposed by Pat Dunn.
John, Margaret McDonald come west on McCully wagon train in 1852
Henry county, Iowa, 1852...John, Margaret, daughter Jennie, son Benjamin set off with the rest of the McCully family as part of the 62 people lead by led by David and Asa McCully, for the long trip west.
Baby Clara Dillon, the only baby born on the wagon train, arrived as the wagons came into Oregon territory. John McKiernan noted in his journal, the train stayed camped a day to celebrate the birth, which had occurred sometime in the night of 14-15 July.
Clara’s death certificate places her birth at Pilot Rock, Umatilla County, Oregon, but she was actually born near Farewell Bend in what is now either Baker or Malheur county, a week before the train reached Pilot Knob.
John McKiernan's journal, writings are fully included in the book, "THE McCULLY TRAIN." His daily entries, especially about the mid-June killing, and following murder trial and summary execution of the killer, in Ham's Fork, Wyoming country, adds definite bits of color to some of the hardships of such journeys.
Arriving in the bountiful Willamette valley in August of that year, the McDonalds soon settled an ODL claim near Lebanon, becoming a new Oregon territory farm family.
Read more about the 1852 McCully wagon train at Sanford R. Wilbur, Books. or even buy "THE McCULLY TRAIN" book.
Coming soon are notes from Sanford's book and annotated database about the McDonald family and relatives living in and around Lebanon and other parts of Linn county.
These notes and page extracts have been rapidly emailed, with a high level of courtesy, by Mr. Wilbur earlier on this very day–December 19.
Thanks Mr. Sanford R. Wilbur, your notes may help provide a degree of provenance for this historic coverlet.
Dear readers, please check Mr. Sanford's McCully Wagon Train (on the Oregon Trail) website and possibly buy the book. (Methinks, authors, even historians, always like cash.)

- OBITUARY....John Nelson McDonald died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.G. Crawford, in Albany, May 7, 1907, at the ripe old age of 84 years, after an illness of about a week.
The deceased was born near Wheeling in West Virginia on March 8th, 1823. In 1852 he came to Oregon by ox team and settled near Lebanon in Linn county, where he has made his home most of the time since. He resided for a few years in Eastern Washington. He was a man who took an active part in building up the schools and churches of the community where he lived and kept himself well advised upon current events and history. Even up to his last illness he read the daily papers every day. The community has lost one of its respected citizens.
The funeral was held Wednesday and the interment was held in the Masonic (sic) cemetery at this city.
On February 19, 1846, in Iowa, he was married to Miss Margaret B1odget (sic), and to this union eight children were born, six of whom are still living. These arc: Mrs. W.A. McCully, of Joseph, Wallowa county, Oregon; B.A. McDonald, of Dayton, Wash.; Mrs. J.G. Crawford, Albany; J.F. McDonald, Paisley, Oregon; Mrs. W.F. Moist, Lebanon, and Joseph McDonald, Dawson, Alaska. On November 29, 1885, his wife died and was buried here in the Lebanon cemetery in the lot where he was yesterday laid to rest.
A large number of relatives and friends of the deceased and his family from Albany and Salem were in Lebanon yesterday to attend the funeral. A short service was held at the grave, conducted by Revs. Griswold, of Albany, and J.C. Gregory, this city.

- On the trip representing the McDonald family were John Nelson McDonald; his wife Margaret Hamilton (Blodgett) McDonald; and their children Benjamin A. McDonald and Jennie McDonald. A third child, Clara McDonald, was the only baby born on the wagon train.
John Nelson McDonald was born 8 March 1823 near Wheeling, West Virginia (then, a part of Marshall County, Virginia). His parents were Alexander McDonald (born Washington County, Pennsylvania 6 October 1781; died Henry County, Iowa 13 April 1845) and Mary Ann King born 1791; died Henry County, Iowa 30 April 1863).
We have no information on his early life. He arrived in Henry County, Iowa, some time before 19 February 1846, when he married Margaret Blodgett there. He apparently was a farmer in Iowa, as well as later in Oregon.
John McKiernan identified John McDonald as one of the jury for the murder trial of “Colonel Beausley.”
In Oregon, the McDonalds settled on a donation land claim near Lebanon, Linn County. They lived in the Lebanon area until about 1887, when Mrs. McDonald died. At some point, John moved to eastern Washington. He was living in Latah, Spokane County, Washington, in 1899. Later, he returned to Linn County, Oregon, and was living in Albany with his daughter Clara (McDonald) Crawford when he died 6 May 1907.

Feb. 18,1886, McDONALD...Near Lebanon, Linn county, Oregon, Nov. 29, 1885, Sister Margret (sic) H., wife of J.N. McDonald.
Sister McDonald was born in Ohio county, West Virginia. December 29, 1827. At the age of fourteen she immigrated with her parents to Iowa, was converted and united with the M.E. Church the following year. She was united in marriage to her now bereaved husband Feb. 19, 1852. They located near Lebanon, where she spent the remainder of her life a devoted wife and mother. The pale horse and his rider came upon her very suddenly without even a moments warning. She retired to rest at her usual hour and quickly fell asleep without a struggle to awake no more until trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptable (sic). JM. Sweney.

- Margaret (Blodgett) McDonald was born about 1828 in what is now West Virginia. She was the daughter of Benjamin Blodgett, who was born in Pennsylvania about 1800, was in West Virginia in the 1820s and 1830s, and moved to Henry County, Iowa, some time after 1843.
After reaching Oregon, she spent the rest of her life around Lebanon, Linn County, where she died in 1887.
John and Margaret allegedly had eight children (144). We have been able to identify six; presumably the others died as infants, as they do not show up on any census.

- Jennie McDonald
- Born 5 February 1847 in Henry County, Iowa. Her early years in Oregon were spent at Lebanon, Linn County, with her family. She married William Asa McCully (another member of the 1852 wagon train; see individual write-up) on 13 September 1868 in Lebanon. For their livelihood, they raised livestock and bred horses. In 1870 they were living in Wasco County, Oregon, and by 1880 had moved to The Cove, Union County. In 1881, they moved to Wallowa County, living first at Prairie Creek and then (after 1898) at Joseph. She died at Joseph 5 April 1924, and is buried in Prairie Creek cemetery.
Jennie and William Asa had seven children (see write-up for William Asa McCully)
- .
- Benjamin A. McDonald
- Born July 1848 in Henry County, Iowa. He grew up around Lebanon, Oregon, and was away from Linn County by the 1870 census. He married Mrs. Sarah (Gumm) Starr about 1875 in Oregon. They lived at Dayton, Columbia County, Washington, from at least 1889 to 1909. Benjamin was employed as a clerk in 1889. We were unable to determine his date of death.
Sarah Gumm may have been born 6 January 1857 in Iowa, of parents born in Kentucky (father) and Illinois. She married first 13 September 1874 to Albert A. Starr (born 19 September 1854, Linn County, Oregon; son of Christopher Starr and Jane [Crabtree] Starr). Albert died 25 July 1875, and she apparently married Benjamin McDonald within a year. Benjamin and Sarah divorced in 1909. They had three children
-
- Clara Dillion McDonald
- She had the distinction of being the only baby born on this wagon train. McKiernan noted that the train stayed camped that day to celebrate the birth, which had occurred sometime in the night of 14-15 July. Clara’s death certificate places her birth at Pilot Rock, Umatilla County, Oregon, but she was actually born near Farewell Bend in what is now either Baker or Malheur county, a week before the train reached Pilot Knob.
Like her siblings, Clara McDonald grew up around Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon, where she married James G. Crawford on 16 September 1871. They lived their married life in Harrisburg and Albany, Linn County, except for 2-3 years spent in Portland, Oregon, in the early 1880s. Clara died in Albany on 10 August 1936, and is buried at Riverside Cemetery.
James Gilmore Crawford was born 12 February 1850 at La Harpe, Hancock County, Illinois, the son of Dr. G. W. Crawford (born 1 January 1818, Grayson County, Virginia; died Oregon) and Mary Ellen (Gilmore) Crawford (born Kentucky, died Oregon). He came with his family overland to Oregon in 1852, settling at Lebanon, Linn County. He became a well known photographer, practicing at various times in Albany, Eugene, Lebanon, Portland, and Harrisburg.
In later years, he had agencies in Portland and San Francisco, as well as his home studio and gallery in Albany, Oregon. He died in Albany 5 January 1929, and is buried there at Riverside Cemetery.
Clara and James reportedly had seven children (155). We were unable to learn one name; the others were:
