Read the "Letter to the Editor" that started it all back in 1975. It's at the page bottom..

Background
This collection of quilt blocks typifies some of the heritage and independence found in interior Alaska.
In the 1970's Fairbanks was a bustle of activity surrounding the construction of the 800 miles of the Alaska Pipeline. This 48 inch oil pipeline was being built from Prudhoe Bay on the far north Arctic coast, south through Fairbanks and Delta Junction, to the deep-water port of Valdez.
At selected locations along the pipeline route and throughout Fairbanks, there were piles of the huge pipe, big, long trucks, engineers, welders, labors (many from Oklahoma and Texas), and "ladies of the evening."

Background
One local wag wrote a letter to the Fairbanks Daily New-Miner. He was suggesting recognition for these women with purple legs. These women who, along with their sisters of years past, had long been a part of the heritage of the Great Northland.

Dawn and  Peggy designed a series of whimsical quilt patterns in their own commemoration of these Alaskan pioneers.

Read a photocopy of the original letter to the Editor in the section following.
Also consider making a large lap quilt of these blocks to give your man a "taste of Alaska."
